5 Tips for mothers to help their kids handle exam stress

Exams don’t have to be stressful if you don’t want them to be. Here’s how mothers can help their children take stress-free exams.
 
 

The most stressful time of the year is here! In India, exams and exam results carry huge importance for students. Whether it’s pursuing their favourite subject, gaining admission to a good college, or getting a well-paying job – everything hinges on the dreaded exam results.

No wonder there’s a lot of pressure on students to perform well. This pressure can not only affect their performance in the exams but also have an adverse mental and physical impact. Exam time is indeed a testing time for both parents and children.

As a mother, wouldn’t you want your kids to be emotionally prepared and write their exams without any stress? Here are some tips to ensure this.

1. A good night’s sleep

 

When children spend a lot of time studying, their bodies need rest – both mental and physical. Research has shown that sleep deprivation affects one’s memory as well as the ability to concentrate and absorb information, thereby lowering academic performance. Moreover, lack of sleep makes children more irritable. So ensure that your child sleeps uninterruptedly for at least 7-8 hours.

2. Healthy diet

If your children fall ill just before or during the exams, it’ll be very difficult for them to focus while studying and taking exams. Their diet and eating habits are crucial to maintain good health and keep infection at bay. Hence, ensure that they eat nutritious food.

Avoid eating out till the exams are over. Everyone knows that home-cooked meals are a very healthy and hygienic option, with the least chance of leading to any illness. So have all meals at home. Provide kids with water-based beverages to keep them hydrated. Also provide them with nuts, whole grains, blueberries, eggs etc. which contain brain-boosting nutrients that'll help them concentrate and keep their mind active. 

3. Study breaks

In an ideal world your children would have finished studying the whole syllabus and be revising it a week before the exams. But we don’t live in an ideal world, do we? If your kids start studying a week before the exams, they would be staring at books for hours together in a bid to complete the syllabus. This doesn’t leave them with much time for breaks.

However, study breaks are important. Encourage them to take an occasional 15-minute break, come out of the room, and have a chat with you. It will make a huge difference to their stress levels. While you are chatting, talk about anything under the sun except exams.

4. De-stressing activities

What is the one thing that can make your child forget all the worries in the world? Your answer to this question would be an activity that can help your child de-stress. While some kids like to play musical instruments, others may like to engage in a sport. But do ensure that they don’t spend more than an hour or two every day on these activities, or they’ll lose out on their study time.

5. Realistic expectations

As a parent, you need to draw a clear line between encouraging and pushing too hard. Nobody knows your children as well as you do, regarding their special abilities, aptitudes, and attitude to studies. So please don’t have unrealistic expectations about exam results. You may think you’re encouraging them to excel, but such pressure can make them feel less confident about scoring well.

Remember, there’s no report card that can reflect a student’s actual potential. It is neither possible nor necessary for your kid to excel in every subject.

If you identify any signs of stress in your children, do not ignore them. Encourage them to talk freely with you and assure them that their self-worth doesn’t depend on their performance in the exams.
