It has been made mandatory to link your PAN to your Aadhar. Here's how to do it quickly

The Income Tax department has been broadcasting through its website, e-mailers and other media such as newspapers asking the taxpayers to link their PAN with Aadhaar, a biometric identity.
Why you are required to link PAN with Aadhaar
During the 2017 Union Budget, the government of India introduced a new section in the Income Tax Act – Section 139AA. Introduction of Section 139AA makes it mandatory to quote Aadhaar number while applying for PAN and for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR).
Conversely, resident nationals who are already holding a PAN need to apply for an Aadhaar number and link the two. Failure to do so will render the PAN invalid. Taxpayers who are yet to file returns for FY 2016-17 need to complete the linking process before September 30, 2019, or else the returns filed by these taxpayers will not be processed.
The Supreme Court in its judgement from September 2018 on the status of Aadhaar upheld the mandatory linking of PAN with Aadhaar.

How to check if the PAN and Aadhaar are linked
- Visit the IT e-filing website: www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
- Look for the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under the ‘Quick Links’ tab.
- A new page will open, which reflects the hyperlink ‘Click here’, allowing you to check the status by feeding your PAN and Aadhaar number.
How to link the two
The IT department has prescribed three ways in which the PAN and Aadhaar can be linked
- Via SMS
- Through the e-filing portal
- Next filing of ITR
Those who have not yet linked the PAN and the Aadhaar can do so easily via SMS to either of the two numbers: 567678 or 56161 in the specified format.
The format is as follows: UIDPAN <SPACE><12-digit Aadhaar number><SPACE><10-digit PAN>
For example: Your 12-digit Aadhaar number is 012345678910 and 10 digit PAN is AFAPT0000Q
To link it, the following message needs to be sent: UIDPAN 012345678910 AFAPT0000Q to either 567678 or 56161.
Before sending the SMS do cross-check that your valid mobile number is registered with the Aadhaar database as the same number will receive an OTP to complete the procedure.
