Updating one’s address after moving to a new city can be a pain, so many choose to ignore it. However, it can save you a lot of time and inconvenience in terms of getting important financial updates and notifications.
Picture this: you are moving to a new city for work and have only a month to change your address on some important documents. A situation like this can be frustrating, especially when you are in the middle of packing. However, this chore should be at the top of your to-do list. The reason? You may not be able to get a replacement credit card or cheque book sent to the new address, so you might have to persuade an obliging neighbour to forward it to you.
Besides, key documents like voter ID, PAN card, Aadhaar, driver’s licence, passport, etc, should have the latest address – say, in case you decide to buy a new car. Thankfully, the process to change your address is quite simple and takes no more than a few minutes in most cases. Here’s how to change your address on the following key documents:

You can usually change your address on your savings bank account through netbanking or by calling customer care. The agent will ask you a few verification questions to confirm your identity and update your address. However, if you have an account with a public sector bank, you may need to visit the branch and submit a written request for change of address. Some banks may ask you to fill out a form and attach proof. It may take 7-14 days to complete the process. The process to change the address on your demat and trading account is almost the same. Almost all insurance companies allow you to change your address on their respective websites. However, you may need to send a written request quoting your policy number in some cases. It may take anywhere from 15 to 45 days for your address to be updated, depending on the exact process followed by the insurance company.
Fill out a form for a change of address at your local post office/bank to transfer your PPF account to the city you will be moving to. Once the request is processed, a cheque or demand draft will be issued to facilitate the transfer. This will be sent to the post office nearest your address in the new city, and a new account will be opened in your name.

The first step to change your address on your mutual fund accounts is to update your KYC information. You can download the ‘Change in KYC form’ from CAMSKRA, the nodal mutual funds transfer agency, fill it out, and send it to your distributor or local AMC branch. For verification, you may be asked to provide your PAN and address proof. The process usually takes 10 working days. CAMS provides a single-window service for change of address requests. It automatically updates your new address with all the funds you may have invested in.
To update your new address on your PAN card, submit an address change form on the website of the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL). Your request will be processed within 15 to 30 days and a new card sent to you within 45 days from the date of request.

Don't forget to update your address on your Aadhar card as soon as possible. The process is quite simple - log on to the Aadhar Self Service Portal by entering your Aadhar number and mobile number and update the address by filling in the required fields. When you click the submit button, a Unique Reference Number will be generated. You will then be directed to upload the supporting address proof documents. You can get the address updated in-person at your local Aadhar enrolment centre.
