The motor vehicles act (1988) mandates third part auto insurance with a view to covering damages to persons other than the driver. The insurer is required to issue a Form 51 or certificate of insurance, which lays down the details of your policy.

Barring third party insurance, you are not required to take any additional insurance on your vehicle. You would however be well advised to take a comprehensive plan. Click here to know why.
