e-Filing “Lite” Version Launched for Tax Payers

A 'Lite' version of the e-filing facility was launched by the Income Tax department on 1 August 2019, for the benefit of the ITR filing citizens. The launch is expected to make the return filing exercise easier and quick for the taxpayers. This version is available in the ITR e-filing web portal.

In order to access e-Filing Lite, the lighter version of the e-Filing portal, the taxpayer has to click on the 'e-Filing Lite' button on the home page of the ITR e-filing web page. In the Lite version, the taxpayers will be provided only essential links like the ITR form links and 26AS. Features like e-proceeding, e-nivaran, compliance, worklist and profile setting, which can be accessed in the regular page will not be visible in the lite version, as these have been taken off from this version. The taxpayers will find this version less cluttered compared to the regular one.

Notably, the due date for filing of the income tax return by individuals was extended by the government from 31 July 2019 to 31 August 2019.

What are the contents of the “Lite” version?

The taxpayer gets the option to file and view the income tax returns in the dashboard of his or her profile. In the 'My Account' section, the taxpayer can view 26AS, e-filed returns and forms and also download pre-filled XML.  And, of course, there is the e-file dropdown where one can file the Income-tax return.

Which are the contents that have been done away with, in the Lite version?

The dropdowns e-proceeding, e-nivaran, compliance, worklist and profile settings have been completely done away with, along with its contents. Even in the 'My Account' dropdown, 10 out the 13 features have been done away with. The e-file dropdown of the Lite version doesn’t have features like response to Notice, Rectification, Response to Outstanding Demand etc.
