A Convenient Process
According to a circular issued by the Department of Posts on May 22, 2023, post offices and other offices handling cash will no longer accept Rs. 2,000 banknotes for exchange. However, the Department emphasises that acceptance of Rs. 2,000 notes should not be refused for any postal transaction. This means that while exchanging the notes will not be possible at the post office, they can still be used for postal transactions.
Deposits and Savings Bank Accounts
The circular further clarifies that individuals can deposit Rs. 2000 banknotes in the denomination that complies with the applicable KYC requirements, without any limits, in the Post Office Savings Bank accounts. The existing instructions and procedures for depositing funds in post office accounts remain the same, providing convenience and flexibility to account holders.
Encouraging Deposits and Exchanges
The RBI and the Department of Posts have jointly provided a significant timeframe to encourage individuals to deposit or exchange their Rs. 2,000 banknotes. The deadline for this process is set for September 30, 2023, allowing ample time for the public to complete their transactions at their convenience.
No Cost Involved
To facilitate a hassle-free transition, the exchange facility for Rs. 2,000 banknotes at post offices will be provided free of cost. Individuals will not be required to pay any fees for availing themselves of this service. This initiative aims to ensure that the public can exchange their notes without any financial burden.

Cash Requirements and Deposits
Businesses or individuals requiring cash amounts exceeding Rs. 20,000 can make deposits into their accounts without restrictions. Depositing Rs. 2000 banknotes into bank accounts will allow individuals to meet their cash requirements by subsequently withdrawing funds against these deposits. This flexibility ensures that the needs of businesses and individuals are accommodated during this transition.
The discontinuation of the issuance of Rs. 2000 banknotes under the RBI's "Clean Note Policy" marks a significant step toward maintaining the quality of banknotes in circulation. The Department of Posts has efficiently communicated the necessary procedures for exchanging or depositing these banknotes at post offices, ensuring a smooth and convenient process for the public. Individuals are encouraged to take advantage of the extended timeframe until September 30, 2023, to complete their transactions at their convenience.
