New Income Tax Portal: Now you can pay income tax online using UPI, credit card and other payment options

It was only a few years ago that people would queue up in banks to pay their self-assessment taxes and advance taxes. Then came the option of income tax online payment, but only if you have a debit card from one of the seven authorised banks. Payment of income tax through netbanking through NSDL was also subsequently opened, but it was limited to 16 authorised banks. Some banks later migrated to the e-Pay Tax facility just to facilitate tax payments in the e-Filing Portal.

However, as noted in the latest income tax news a new facility is being offered. Taxpayers can now pay income tax on the e-filing portal itself using one of the various options. 

How To Pay Income Tax Online on the e-Filing Portal?

You can be paying taxes like TDS, advance tax, self-assessment tax etc. through the e-Filing portal. Here are the steps involved in the payment of advance tax through the portal. 

  • Sign in to the e-filing portal by entering your username and password,
  • In the e-file menu, click on e-Pay Tax and then on New Payment,
  • Enter the type of tax to be paid, by clicking on Proceed,
  • Select Assessment Year and, say, Advance Tax and click on continue,
  • Provide the tax, surcharge, cess etc. portions of the tax amount and click on continue,
  • Choose between Net Banking, Debit Cards, RTGS/NEFT, Payment Gateways or Pay at the bank counter.

Let us see how to pay income tax online when you choose one of these options,

  • Debit cards – Although not yet enabled by authorised banks, it is expected to be similar to the NSDL website,
     
  • Net banking – Select net banking as the payment option and click on Continue. You will be redirected to your bank’s net banking login page,
     
  • NEFT/RTGS – If you select this option and continue, you will get a preview of the payment details. You can click on Pay Now or Continue. You have to deposit the signed copy of the duly filled challan form within 15 days of generating it.
     
  • Payment gateway – Presently, you can use Federal Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank gateway to pay the tax. Within the payment gateway, you get the option to pay through debit or credit card, net banking or UPI. Select the desired option and click on pay or continue. On successful payment, you will receive the challan and confirmation on your registered mobile number and email ID, 
     
  • Pay at bank counter – In this option, you can select the bank and mode of payment and continue. The challan form generated must be filled, signed and presented to the authorized bank’s branch within 15 days.

With this new introduction, you can pay tax choosing from a large number of banks. E-paid tax will appear in your e-filing profile’s payment history tab which you can refer to during income tax return (ITR) filing, and you will receive a confirmation on email ID and phone every time you pay tax. With this next level of digitisation, income tax payment becomes more convenient for taxpayers like you.
